Leitz-Park 2018

A place for values and visions

The film will take you on a journey that began with a vision.

To the east is the forum with the company headquarters, the company’s history, an exhibition of historical cameras, lenses and sport optics products, an insight into the factory and the Leica Galerie in the building foyer. In the midst of this is Café Leitz, which boasts a large forecourt with a fountain and outdoor exhibition space.

Together with the World of Leica opposite, a kind of modern-day marketplace with outstanding architecture has been created which will welcome Leitz Park guests as an overall experience from June 2018. The museum can be found here, together with the museum shop and the Leica Store. The Global Leica Akademie has also taken up residence here, offering a wide array of photography workshops and photo trips, and complemented by state-of-the-art conference rooms which can be hired.

The new site is the home of four buildings: The Leica Camera AG building will offer its future visitors more top-class exhibitions, a museum, a Leica archive, a Store and the Leica Akademie. With 129 rooms and suites in modern interior design, the arcona LIVING ERNST LEITZ HOTEL visualises the world of Leica in a variety of ways and offers its guests the perfect opportunity for an overnight stay in style.

The hotel, which opened on 1 May 2018, has a restaurant with a patio for both its guests and visitors to the Leitz-Park. A further building is occupied by Leitz Cine Wetzlar. The six-storey office block on the new site is currently occupied by Leitz-Park GmbH, the Internet agency ‘die interaktiven’, a medical technology company and a physiotherapy practice.

Eyes wide open! 100 years of Leica photography

The anniversary exhibition makes a guest appearance in Leitz-Park

Following successful appearances at numerous venues around the globe, the works of famous Leica photographers are now here to take visitors to Leitz-Park on an exciting journey through time. The anniversary exhibition focuses on the revolutionary changes prompted by a technical innovation, the compact and easily portable ‘Ur-Leica’. The 35 mm camera not only brought about change and progress in the field of photography, but also triggered a significant shift in our perception of society and the world around us.

In fact, most of the images that engraved themselves into our collective consciousness from the 1920s onwards were captured with the Leica (‘Leitz Camera’), and thus impressively documented contemporary events. From that point in time onwards, Leica has shaped and changed the way photographers see the world – and continues to do so today. The unique touring exhibition, ‘Eyes wide open! 100 years of Leica photography’, presents impressive images by acclaimed Leica photographers together with numerous exhibits from 100 years of 35 mm photography.

The exhibition can be seen at the Leitz-Park museum from 17 June to October 2018.

Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m; closed on Mondays.

Leica Hall of Fame Award 2018

Photographer Bruce Davidson’s lifework will be honoured

On 15 June 2018, American photographer Bruce Davidson will be honoured with the Leica Hall of Fame Award. In his honour, the Leica Gallery Wetzlar will be showing a selection of his extensive oeuvre until 9 September 2018.

Many series of photographs shot by Bruce Davidson have long since become inscribed in the canon of the most important reportages and documentary records of everyday life in the USA. These include ‘Brooklyn Gang’, ‘East 100th Street’ and ‘Subway’ – and the story of Jimmy Armstrong, the dwarf-clown of the Beatty circus: These photos evoke emotions, then as now.

Bruce Davidson is by no means one of those typical photojournalists who set out to capture sensations that are here today and gone tomorrow – his sensitive portrait series most often provide startling insights into worlds otherwise closed to the viewer’s eyes.

The Bruce Davidson exhibition can be visited from 17 June to 9 September 2018.

Opening hours: Monday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
